Is he your Prince Charming?

May 05, 2014

We have been hearing about them in every fairytale since childhood. The handsome and brave Prince Charming always comes riding in on a white horse to save the princess and then they live happily ever after. Even when we grow up, we still think of ourselves as princesses no matter how focused and career-oriented we become. Every girl has a picture of her Prince Charming in her mind. But does he actually exist? Not really!

Marrying Mr Alright

Recently seen two of my friends getting engaged at what Society calls the ’right age’ – that’s between 25 and 27. They are both independent, working women  and have gone for arranged marriages.

So, their Prince Charmings are the kind of guys who promise a safe and secure lifetime rather than being the loves of their lives; and what they’re saving their princesses from is a life of struggling financially. What’s more, these princes are much older – almost 30 – and mostly not conventionally handsome.

So the question is, are we only to marry men who can keep us safe financially?

What about Mr Right?

Not saying that you need to marry someone who’s movie star handsome, but neglecting other qualities to marry someone financially well off is also not a good idea. We all want a safe life, but can only money guarantee a happily ever after?

Marriage is all about compromises, and yet much of the compromising is done by the woman. Wouldn’t it be better if a girl could decide whether she wants to be rescued or whether she wants to fight her battles herself?

Making choices

What we need is a change of perception. Our opinions need to count, even in critical matters such as marriage. If our parents think we are old enough to get married, then they should also consider that we are old enough to make that decision by ourselves.

We need to be given a chance to find ourselves and decide what we deserve. Is it right for us to blindly listen to our elders and believe that only they know what’s good for us?

All I’m saying is, give us a chance to find our own Happily Ever Afters. We deserve it!
