Tips to get over your EX

Nov 11, 2015

How to get over a breakup is one of the great dilemmas haunting people. It’s rarely a quick and easy process, and it’s often complicated by all the things that the two of you still have in common, like friends, favorite hangouts and even living quarters. Maybe the most frustrating thing about the whole process is that even if ending the relationship was the right thing to do — even if he/she cheated on you — it can still be hard to bury all those memories and move on with your life. Dont worry, the next 11 tips would help you give you a headstart to get over your breakup.

1- Take him/her off that pedestal

First things first: Stop acting like your ex was God’s gift. He/she wasn’t perfect. If we’re being honest, they weren’t probably even close. Make a list of annoying traits. Let your buddies bad-mouth her/him. Do whatever you have to do, just take him/her off that pedestal.

2- Get closure

Step two for getting over your ex: get closure. If you’re going to end this thing, end it. Make sure you’re both on the same page. This is a breakup, not a “break.” The two of you are moving on, which means potentially seeing other people. If you feel the need to do a relationship postmortem, do it now. You won’t be seeing him/her again for a while.

3- Don’t contact

This may be the most important of our 11 tips for getting over your ex. After you’ve gotten closer, don’t contact her. Go cold turkey. Seriously. Maybe you said some crap about trying to stay friends, maybe you made some idiot vow to “always be there for each other,” but forget it. By staying in touch with old flames you’re asking for months (if not years) of on-again-off-again uncertainty. So, throw out his/her phone number, stop texting and unfriend her on Facebook. Imagine how freaked out you’ll be the first time you see some strange dude in her profile picture, and you’ll see why a clean break is essential.

4- Work out

Without an ex gobbling up hours out of every day, you may be wondering what to do with yourself. Now that you’re single, we suggest hitting the gym or taking a jog. It’s a healthy way to work out all of that post-breakup frustration. Getting in shape is also a good way to boost your self-esteem. And don’t forget: The gym is a great place to meet new partners (plenty of reasons why working out makes our list of 11 tips for getting over your ex).

5- Avoid his/her friends and the places of your ex’s hangouts

If you want to avoid the temptations that come with bumping into an ex, you might have to make some sacrifices. You might have to cut ties with some of your mutual friends. You might have to avoid some of your favorite haunts (because they’re your ex’s favorite haunts, too). Trust us, it’s a small price to pay for peace of mind.

6- Throw away anything that reminds you of your ex

That dopey-looking teddy bear they gave you for your birthday, the sappy love letters he wrote, the adorable pictures of the two of you — chuck ’em. Throw it all away. The sooner you get all that junk out of your house the sooner you’ll get over him/her.

And before you ask, yes, it’s fine to keep items that don’t evoke any emotional connections. But clothes, jewelry, keepsakes should be ditched.

7- Don’t try to get your stuff back

By the same token, you don’t want to try to get your stuff back. You can’t have a relationship relapse if you don’t allow yourself to see your ex. Forget about all that stuff you left at his/her place. Consider it gone. A few thousand rupees you’re going to have to spend to replace a few DVDs is a small price to pay to avoid an ex who could be either desperately needy or irrationally angry.

8- Hang out with your friends

One of the things you had to sacrifice when in a committed relationship was time with your friends. (Girlfriends are notorious time-bandits, always greedy for more and more of your attention) But now that you’re single, you can reconnect with the buds you left behind. Not only will it be fun, but it will also be therapeutic because hanging out with your friends is one of the most rewarding of our 11 tips for getting over your ex.

9- Exercise your newfound freedom

Relationships are about compromise. Being single should be about doing whatever the hell you want. Look, you’ve ditched the ball and chain. You’re free. So stay out until four in the morning, hop on a bike to with your brother, or just sit on your ass and watch cricket all day. Taking pleasure in all of those things that you couldn’t do being in a relationship is a great way to get over your ex.

10- Remember the bad times

It’s pretty common for people to idealize their significant others after a breakup. You’ll just be going about your business, and then, suddenly, you’ll remember an inside joke or a great date. Then you’ll grin, thinking about a cute personality quirk she had, and before long, you’re fantasizing about how great your sex life used to be.

Snap out of it. One of the most important of our 11 tips for getting over your ex is to remember the bad times. Focus on the fights and the problems. Recollect his/her bad habits and shady behavior. It’s like taking a cold shower.

11- Sleep with somebody else

The most foolproof method for getting over your ex is to sleep with somebody else. It’s the fastest and most efficient way to get an ex out of your system. One of the reasons we equivocate about leaving an ex behind is because — no matter how confident we are — we worry we won’t find someone new. That’s what sends us crawling back to our familiar, comfy, dysfunctional exes time and time again. Finding a new love interest, even for one night, is the best method of countering all those self-defeating thoughts.

Bonus: Make sure your next is an upgrade

One last thing you want to be certain of is that your love life is moving in the right direction. If your rebound is a train wreck, you could end up moving backward and reconnecting with your ex, only to waste another year or two of your life on a relationship that’s doomed to fail. So be sure that your next is an upgrade.

Banish her from your mind

If you follow these 11 tips for getting over your ex, we’re certain you’ll be back in the saddle in no time. It’s never easy, but with a solid plan and a lot of willpower, you can forget the past and focus on your future.

  1. Beneficial information. Fortuitous myself I uncovered your internet site unintentionally, and I am shocked precisely why this particular coincidence failed to took place before! I personally book marked the idea.

    1. help my mgiarre.?I feel like My mgiarre is falling apart. Befor my husband and I got married I told him no porn or it will hurt me to much and it will end the mgiarre. He promised not to do that. A month ago I found out that he had been doing it up untill six months ago and had been doing it the whole time we were dating and after we got married. We purchased a book about how to survive an affair sice that is the way I feel about it. I have been using it and it has been helping. I have noticed though that sometimes after working on it i feel upset and it takes sometime for me to feel better, but once I start to feel better I feel better than I did about things. It is just that start of working through it. Is that normal? I did my first work yesterday and I found myself sleeping through the whole day. Is that normal when someone is so upset? It is alos very hard to work through all these probles since we have 5 kids two that are still babies. Will our mgiarre ever be the same and if how long?My husband told me on his own and truly feels guilty about what he did and the pain he caused. He takes full responsiblity even though it is hard for me to not think it was my fault in some way. He has truely apologized for what he did in a pool of tears on my lap knowing that he crushed my world around me. He is also working through his part of the book and is better able to understand how I feel and how to get me to trust him again. This is the first long relationship he has been in and is still learning how to make it work. has porn hurt anyone elses relationship as much as it has hurt mine. Even my husband ageed that since he stoped our love life became better and that the coming clean to me let a big load off. Has anyone else noticed this in their mgiarre? help me and my husband out. Give him some advice and me some too.

  2. Hey Micaela,

Thank you so much for writing in.

See please understand that porn is always a part of a guy’s life. Most might not agree to it, but it is always there. Lets take the ideal situation of a guy, who is simple, hasnt been laid much, has had an average life and nothing exceptional. But please note that he also has fantasies and he feels like an absolute loser when he sees other guys getting laid and he doesnt even have a chance. So he depends on porn to boost his ego. Now i agree that you both had spoken about it and you take it very seriously. But do note that problems like these are very common in marriages and can be handled by a very simple way of trusting him when he says that he is coming clean. Yes, doubts will be there in your mind and no one is ever perfect. The good thing is that he is not cheating on you over anyone else. I would suggest to take it step by step, and a good relationship is always based on forgiving and forgetting. If you over analyse your past and pull it to the present then its a mess and your marriage would definitely come crumbling down. But as i understand that you definitely want it to work, for that no matter how hard it is, yu have to start trusting him again. When is sees the same from you, he will also respond back and thus love in you marriage will be restored. No one wants a broken marriage and think about your kids, you dont want them to have a traumatic childhood. So hold on, stitch it together and stay blessed.

    Thx
